WILL THERER BE A NEW AVATAR SERIES SERIES
One thing both old and new fans can agree on is that the Nickelodeon series needs to come back and show us the lives of Aang, Katara, and Sokka immediately after usurping Fire Lord Ozai. With the re-emergence of Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s popularity in recent years, old fans of the show were reminded of the magic that is the animated series while new fans got to experience the show’s beauty for the first time. By seeing more of the world, not only would fans have a third show to enjoy, but it would better inform both series we already have to make them all the better.By Diana Nosa 11 months ago Follow Tweet We need to learn more about all of the baggage that comes with the traditions Korra upturns before we can truly understand her decision in doing away with them. There have been a thousand generations of Avatars and the history stretches back so far that the Kyoshinovels have a field day exploring that history and how the cultures of the Four Nations grew over time. As is, they feel out of character, but getting to see that growth up close could reveal them as a special kind of natural.īut the most important quality of a middle series would not just be the story it told outright, but the way it would flesh out and grow the setting. Learning that Aang was a somewhat negligent parent to Bumi and Kya or that Toph went from being disgusted by rules and civil structure to embracing it as a police chief are the kinds of revelations that seem more shocking in Korra than they needed to be. Getting to see Zuko's reign as Fire Lord, Katara and Aang as parents and Toph form a police force from her metalbending academy would not only be rewarding to the countless fans of those characters, but would allow the world of Avatar to age more naturally. The most obvious solution would have been to focus on the same cast as in the original series, following Team Avatar as adults during the establishment of Republic City. Jumping ahead seven decades in the story, radically altering the world every season and tossing in over a dozen new characters while playing coy about the history of the old ones was all a bit dizzying with so little space between The Last Airbender and Korra.įor the Avatar world to truly feel so old and mired in tradition that it was in desperate need of the revolution Korra brought, the creators needed to show more of that world to audiences and let them dwell in it. Whereas other series in a position similar to Korra came off the heels of decades of established canon and status quo for them to overturn, as was the case for Star Wars, the world of Avatar was still relatively new and unexplored.

With only 3 seasons under its belt, Avatar may have been a fan favorite but it was by no means a cultural touchstone spanning entire generations. The only problem is that this message would have been far more effective if a different series padded the space between the two existing ones. Each season shoes Korra growing and learning as she faces struggles in a manner completely different from Aang, and she establishes herself as Avatar in her own right by making decisions that radically upset the status quo. Whether it's opening the Spirit World or starting the Avatar line anew, the Avatar creators made it clear that as magical as the original series was, there was a whole lot of room for it to grow. To its credit, the show was unafraid to fully tackle the task at hand. Under those conditions it was almost inevitable that the show couldn't fully satisfy fans and that Korra's legacy would pale in comparison. For Korra there were certainly some big shoes to fill, with Aang's journey throughout the original series not only constructing a larger-than-life legend in-universe to live up to, but establishing a sterling reputation for success that would be a hard act to follow. It's certainly nothing new for a new installment in a franchise to feature a narrative about bucking tradition or transcending the confines of its predecessor.
